What is Shrove Sunday or Tuesday? Traditionally it was a day of repentance, the last day before Ash Wednesday, when in the Middle Ages people would confess their sins in preparation for Lent. Villagers would 'cut away' or 'use up' the fat, eggs, meat, and milk from their kitchens. This was a way to not let food go to waste during the 40 days of fasting. In England on Shrove
Tuesday they made pancakes. In France they used all fat and called the day Fat Tuesday, or Mardi Gras.
